ending childhood hunger // no kid hungry

Posted on: Monday, March 9, 2015

did you know one in five children in the united states struggles with hunger, including more than 27% of kids in california? i hate that statistic. i can’t even begin to imagine what that would be like and it saddens me that it’s reality to people, especially children, all around us. no kid hungry is a campaign ending hunger by ensuring children get the healthy food they need. they do this by connecting kids to nutrition programs {school breakfasts + summer meals} and by teaching families how to cook healthy, affordable food at home. i love cooking and spent a lot of time in the kitchen with my mom growing up; i think it’s super important for kids to start learning how to cook when they’re young.

it’s always cool to be a part of fixing the problem – even in a very small way. i’m excited to have the opportunity to attend an awesome local event that supports no kid hungry’s efforts later this month on march 26th. Taste of the Nation San Francisco is a fundraiser dinner event hosted by the no kid hungry campaign in downtown san francisco, where people come together for food and drinks from local restaurants, wineries and breweries. chefs and mixologists from restaurants including AQ, Wayfare Tavern {where I went to dinner last Friday!), Boulevard, Central Kitchen, Delfina, Foreign Cinema, Hawker Fare, Quince and Soulva will be there. i am so excited for all the amazing food and drinks, but best of all, to be surrounded by people who are all interested in ending childhood hunger.

the event benefits four local san francisco nonprofits, including 18 ReasonsChildren of SheltersCalifornia Food Policy Advocates, and California Association of Food Banks. every $1 raised from the taste of the nation event provides the equivalent of 10 meals to kids in the Bay Area and all over the US. this is my first year attending the event, but they raised $230K last year and aiming to up the ante to $250K this year.

i’ll be sharing live from the event on my instagram and twitter, but make sure to follow no kid hungry for updates @nokidhungrysf! xo
